Omni-Roast explained

Omni-Roast erklärt

What is Omni Roast?

Omni Roast refers to a coffee roast that is deliberately developed to be suitable for all common preparation methods – from espresso to filter coffee, French press, or cold brew. The term "Omni" is derived from the Latin omnis, meaning "all" or "universal". This is precisely the approach of this roast: one coffee, one roast profile, many possibilities.

In contrast to the classic distinction between espresso roasts and filter roasts, Omni Roast coffee pursues the idea that a high-quality coffee bean with a precisely tuned roast profile can excel in different brewing methods. A good example of this is our Brazil Specialty Coffee, which, as an Omni Roast, convinces in both espresso and filter coffee. The focus here is not on maximum specialization, but on balance, versatility, and transparency.

The idea behind Omni Roasting

Traditionally, espresso roasts are roasted darker to achieve more body and less acidity, while filter roasts remain lighter to emphasize fruity and floral aromas. Omni Roast combines these two worlds. The coffee beans are roasted so that they are neither too light nor too dark, thus offering a harmonious flavor profile that unfolds differently depending on the preparation method.

Important: An Omni Roast is not meant to taste the same everywhere. Rather, it reveals different facets depending on the brewing method. As an espresso, chocolatey, nutty, or caramel notes may dominate, while as a filter coffee, fruitier or finer aromas come to the forefront.

Aroma profile and character

A well-roasted Omni Roast is characterized by a balanced aroma profile. Typical features include:

  • a moderate, well-integrated acidity
  • a round body
  • a clear, but not dominant sweetness

Depending on the coffee bean, varietal, and origin, fruity, floral, or chocolatey notes may appear. Whether it's 100% Arabica, Robusta, or a blend also influences the flavor profile. Especially in the Specialty Coffee sector, Omni Roast is often used to showcase the quality of the green bean in a versatile way. Our Costa Rica Specialty Coffee is an excellent example of an Omni Roast with a complex and balanced aroma profile.

What should be considered during preparation?

As Espresso
Finely adjusted grind size and a clean, not too short extraction. Omni Roasts can appear a bit livelier in espresso than classic espresso roasts. Precise adjustment helps to keep acidity and sweetness in balance.
As Filter Coffee
A slightly coarser grind size and a water temperature of about 92–94 °C ensure that the fine aromas are not overwhelmed. The roast often brings more depth and body than a very light filter roast.
In the French Press
The Omni Roast appears particularly round and full-bodied. Due to longer contact with water and the absence of paper filters, more coffee oils are retained, giving the coffee a creamy mouthfeel. A medium to coarse grind size and a brewing time of about four minutes are ideal.

How is Omni Roast coffee roasted?

The roasting of Omni Roast requires a lot of experience and finesse. The roasting process is often deliberately slowed down to reduce acids while improving body and solubility. Slowly roasted coffees are easier to extract and react more stably to different brewing methods.

The goal is a roast profile that provides enough structure for espresso without losing the aromatic clarity for filter preparations. This balance makes Omni Roast technically challenging, both in roasting and later in preparation.

Challenges of Omni Roasting

Omni Roast is not a compromise, but a conscious decision – yet it also brings challenges. Due to slow roasting, certain prominent aromas may be less pronounced, making the coffee taste more roasted despite a lighter roast level. Additionally, Omni Roast demands more knowledge from the barista: grind size, extraction time, coffee quantity, and brewing method must be precisely matched.

Especially with espresso, the challenge is to harmonize acidity and extraction without the coffee tasting sharp or unbalanced. However, Omni Roast offers plenty of scope for fine-tuning and experiments.

Who is Omni Roast suitable for?

Omni Roast is ideal for anyone who:

  • uses different preparation methods
  • wants only one coffee bean for multiple applications
  • enjoys experimenting and consciously preparing their coffee

Omni Roast is particularly practical for automatic coffee machines with only one bean hopper, as it excels as espresso, Café Crème, or a filter variant. Discover our Omni Roast coffees like the Brazil Specialty Coffee or the Costa Rica Specialty Coffee for versatile coffee enjoyment.
